Detroit, which leads the division by three games over Cleveland and Chicago, posted its fifth consecutive victory with a 92-91 win over the New Jersey Nets on Tuesday at The Palace of Auburn Hills.
Chauncey Billups made a pair of free throws with seven seconds left in the game to lead Detroit. Richard Hamilton and Rasheed Wallace tallied 21 points apiece for Detroit, which improved to 5-0 against the Atlantic Division this season and won for the seventh time in eight games.
The Pistons will play four of their next six games on the road and are 9-5 away from the Motor City this season.
New York had a three-game winning streak halted on Saturday when the Philadelphia 76ers handed them a 98-77 setback at the Wachovia Center.
Jamal Crawford scored 21 points for the Knicks, while Renaldo Balkman added 10 points and David Lee contributed 10 points and 13 boards. After Wednesday's home game against the Pistons, New York will open a five-game road trip.
The Knicks are one game off the lead in the Atlantic Division and 7-10 at Madison Square Garden this season.
Detroit defeated the Knicks, 108-100, on December 1 this season and has won two straight, eight of nine and 10 of the last 12 meetings.
The Pistons have won three of their last five games at New York.
