Top-seeded Syracuse and Gonzaga clash in West Region
NCAA Basketball Betting Lines
03/21/2010 - Buffalo, NY (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - The first-ever meeting between powers from opposite coasts takes place this afternoon at HSBC Arena in Buffalo, New York as the Gonzaga Bulldogs clash with the Syracuse Orange in the second round of the 72nd annual NCAA Tournament.
The top seed in the West Regional, Syracuse will be heading to Salt Lake City if the team wins today for Sweet 16 action. Head coach Jim Boeheim, who guided the Orange to the national championship in 2003, won his 43rd NCAA Tournament outing on Friday with a 79-56 victory against Vermont, the same Vermont that stunned Syracuse in the first round of the tourney only a few years ago.
Boeheim, who is now eighth on the all-time wins list in NCAA Tournament history, has directed his program to seven wins in eight tries against nationally-ranked programs this season and now has his squad showing a tremendous 51-32 record in the tournament over the years.
As for the eighth-seeded Bulldogs, they are aiming to repeat the effort displayed by fellow West Coast Conference member Saint Mary's, with the 10th- seeded Gaels having knocked off second-seeded Villanova yesterday in the second round. The Zags, losers to SMC in the West Coast Conference Tournament title game, are in this tournament for the 12th straight year and the 13th time overall and are showing a 15-12 record after dismissing Florida State in the first round two days ago, 67-60.
With 12 straight showings in this event the Bulldogs are tied with Texas and Wisconsin for fourth on the active list, trailing only Kansas, Duke and Michigan State.
The winner of today's meeting will be back in action on Thursday at Energy Solutions Arena in Salt Lake City against fifth-seeded Butler.
Even though Florida State had the top field-goal shooting defense in the nation heading into first-round action, it was Gonzaga that clamped down on the Seminoles as the squad held FSU to just 35.6 percent from the floor in the seven-point decision. Matt Bouldin led four starters in double figures with his 17 points, adding eight rebounds, while Steven Gray chipped in 15 points and seven boards of his own. Giving the squad a huge lift early in the encounter was Robert Sacre who eventually finished with 13 points and a game- high nine rebounds, followed by Elias Harris who also dropped in 13 points for a team that shot an even 50 percent from the floor. Bouldin, another in a long line of Bulldogs named the WCC Player of the Year, leads the team with his 15.8 ppg and 129 assists and is also responsible for close to five rebounds per game which makes him one of the more accomplished all-around performers in the tournament. Harris (14.7 ppg), who has made good on 46 percent of his three-point tries this season, is also the top man on the glass for the Zags with his 7.1 rpg as the team beats the opposition in the paint by five rebounds per game at the moment.
Without the services of center Arinze Onuaku, who again is listed as being out for today's game with a right quadriceps injury, the Orange had little trouble taking care of Vermont in the paint on Friday with a 40-29 advantage on the glass in the 23-point win. Wes Johnson, the Big East Conference Player of the Year, finished with a team-best 18 points, adding six boards, three assists and three steals, while Scoop Jardine came off the bench to register 14 points in 23 minutes of action. Rick Jackson made his presence known with 12 points, eight rebounds and four blocked shots, while Andy Rautins filled out his stat line with 11 points, eight boards and a team-best six assists. Brandon Triche tacked on 10 points, thanks to a trio of three pointers. Johnson leads a list of four active players scoring in double figures for the Orange with his 16.0 ppg, adding almost eight and a half rebounds per game while he makes good on an even 40 percent of his three-point tries. Rautins has been the most productive perimeter shooter with his 89 triples this year, leading to his modest 11.7 ppg, while doling out a team-best 165 assists.

Brandon Roy Favorite to Win 2007 NBA Rookie of the Year
Portland TrailBlazer’s guard, Brandon Roy, is MySportsbook.com’s overwhelming favorite to win the NBA Rookie of the Year odds.
Despite missing 20 games due to an injury earlier this season, Roy has definitely put up the best numbers of his 1st year peers. In 32 games, Roy is averaging 15.3 PPG, 4.2 boards and 3.5 assists in over 33 minutes of play per game. While most rookies breakdown as the season progresses (see Morrison), Roy is only getting stronger as his playing time and scoring average has increased each month.
With 30 or so games left in the regular season, Roy isn’t a lock for the award by any means. Other rookies are putting together some pretty impressive campaigns and a few could give Roy a run for the award with increased playing time. Heading the list is first pick, Andrea Bargnani of the Toronto Raptors. Even though he has started only two games all season, Bargnani is averaging 10.3 PPPG while shooting 35% from deep.
Randy Foye of the Minnesota Timberwolves could be set to give Roy the best competition NBA Rookie of the Year betting lines. With the benching of Mike James, Foye looks like he could be the starter in the T-Wolves backcourt for the rest of the season. So far, Foye has averaged 9 PPG and 2.4 assists in just under 21 minutes per game. With his new role of starter, Foye’s numbers will definitely increase. In his first game as the new starting guard this past Sunday, Foye had 10 points; five rebounds and 8 assists. More importantly, he logged 34 minutes of playing time; his third highest run of the season.
Adam Morrison, of the Charlotte Bobcats, was the favorite early on in the season after averaging 15+ PPG through the first month of the season. Ever since his torrid start, Morrison’s point production has declined each month. This really isn’t surprising, considering at 6’8” he only weighs 205 lbs. Obviously he will need to hit the weights big time during the off-season in order to keep from breaking down in the future.
