Winchester leads Blues past Sharks in shootout

12/27/2008 - St. Louis, MO (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Brad Winchester scored the equalizer in the third period and tallied the game-winner in the shootout, as the St. Louis Blues edged San Jose, 3-2, notching their first win over the Sharks since the 2006-07 season.
St. Louis' David Perron and San Jose's Ryane Clowe were the only players to score through the first four shooters, with each tallying on a backhander.
Winchester, going first in the third round, fired a shot under Evgeni Nabokov's glove to give St. Louis the edge. Manny Legace then stopped Joe Pavelski's attempt to seal the win for the Blues.
Perron scored in regulation, while Legace stopped 24 shots for the Blues, who hadn't beaten the Sharks since January 20, 2007. Since then San Jose had beaten St. Louis seven consecutive times -- including a 5-4 shootout victory on November 6.
Jonathan Cheechoo and Mike Grier each had a goal and an assist for the Sharks, who had a two-game win streak snapped. Joe Thornton added a pair of helpers for San Jose, while Nabokov made 26 saves.
With St. Louis trailing 2-1 entering the final period, Winchester provided the tying tally. On a Blues rush, he put the puck past Nabokov's right pad at the six-minute mark.
The teams played the remainder of the third stanza in frenzied fashion, though neither one could break the deadlock. St. Louis had a few chances early in overtime thanks to San Jose turnovers, but didn't score, and Nabokov stopped a Keith Tkachuk breakaway with just under a minute remaining in the extra session, leading to the shootout.
Perron got St. Louis on the board just 26 ticks into the game, though Cheechoo evened the contest with 7:41 remaining in the second period. Grier tallied with 2:11 left in the middle stanza for a 2-1 Sharks lead.
